FPA Performance is the sport & performance arm of Family Psychology Associates - a clinical practice built around the belief that elite performance is a trainable skill, not a personality trait.
Our team is doctoral-level licensed and trained in evidence-based protocols.
FPA Performance was founded on a simple frustration: too much of "mental performance" content is hype, slogans, and self-help. The athletes we work with - high school recruits, college rosters, e-sports competitors, performing artists - deserve the same rigor for their mind that they get for their body.
So we built a practice that combines clinical psychology (the science of how the human mind works under stress) with applied sport psychology (the practical playbook of what to do about it). We diagnose where your performance breaks down, build a protocol that targets it, and then drill it like reps until it's automatic.
Train the mind the way you train the body - with reps, recovery, and a real plan.
Most of our clients are middle-school through college athletes and their families - with a strong second focus on performers and high-stakes professionals.
No two athletes get the same plan - but every plan moves through these three phases.
Where in the performance does it break down? Pre-game routine, mid-set tilt, fourth-quarter legs, post-loss spiral. We map the failure point first.
Mental skills with sets and reps - breath work, attentional control, imagery, reframing - drilled until they're automatic when the stakes climb.
Practice, perform, review, refine. Same loop your coaches use for technique - applied to your headspace.
FPA Performance launched in 2014 as the sports and performance psychology arm of Family Psychology Associates, a St. Petersburg, Florida group practice with more than 20 licensed clinicians. It was co-founded by Dr. Ben Snyder and Dr. Geoffrey Peal, Psy.D.
Being part of a larger clinical practice matters. When a performance problem turns out to be clinical, such as anxiety, depression, or an adjustment disorder after an injury or a loss, our psychologists can assess and treat it directly. Performance work is fee-for-service; when a diagnosable condition is part of the picture, the focus can shift to insurance-based therapy when it is clinically appropriate.
Our two co-founders lead the clinical work. Dr. Ben Snyder is a licensed clinical psychologist and ultrarunner who specializes in distance sports, ball sports, and the performing arts. Dr. Geoffrey Peal, Psy.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and co-owner of Family Psychology Associates, with more than twenty years as a competitive gamer; he leads our esports work. Both are members of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).
